When a standard size doesn't fit your apparatus or workflow, a custom glove box is usually the smarter buy — you get a chamber shaped around your process instead of forcing your process into a box. The key to a good custom build is specifying it clearly. Use this checklist before you request a quote.
1. Internal working dimensions
Specify the internal dimensions you need, not the outside size. Measure the largest item or apparatus that will go inside, then add clearance for your hands and gloves and for anything that lives in the box permanently (balances, crimpers, fixtures). Width × depth × height — list all three. Undersizing makes work awkward; oversizing wastes purge gas and bench space.
2. Atmosphere mode
Decide how the box controls its environment, because it changes the build:
- Inert gas purging (nitrogen or argon), non-vacuum
- Vacuum-capable operation
- Both, with a vacuum transition antechamber for transfers
3. Glove ports
Specify how many glove ports and on which sides. Match this to how many people use the box at once and the direction they'll work from. Note glove size if you have a preference.
4. Valves and ports
- Gas inlet/outlet valves for inert-gas exchange
- Vacuum ports sized to your pump, if you need vacuum
- Feed-throughs for power, sensor, or data cables that must enter the chamber
5. Pass-through / antechamber
If you transfer materials in and out without breaking atmosphere, specify a vacuum transition chamber and its size. A small antechamber is fine for tools and samples; size up if you move larger items.
6. Environmental control and extras
Call out any need for temperature or humidity control, internal lighting, shelving, or special port placement. The more precisely you describe your workflow, the closer the first quote will be to what you actually need.
