An inert gas glove box is the workhorse of air-sensitive laboratory work. It gives you a sealed chamber where the normal atmosphere is replaced with an unreactive gas, so oxygen- and moisture-sensitive samples, reactions, and assembly work stay protected. Here's how these boxes work and how to choose between nitrogen and argon.
How inert gas purging works
The chamber has a gas inlet valve and an outlet valve. You feed inert gas in through the inlet while air is pushed out through the outlet, displacing the oxygen and moisture inside until the chamber holds a stable, low-oxygen working atmosphere. A well-sealed chamber then keeps that atmosphere while you work through the gloves. Note that a purge-only box is not vacuum-capable — it should never be connected to a vacuum pump.
Nitrogen vs argon: which inert gas?
- Nitrogen is economical and widely available, and it's a fine inert atmosphere for many air- and moisture-sensitive tasks.
- Argon is heavier than air and chemically inert toward materials that nitrogen can react with — most importantly lithium. For lithium battery work and certain reactive metals and reagents, argon is the right choice.
The rule of thumb: nitrogen for general air-sensitive work, argon when your materials react with nitrogen or when you need a denser blanket gas.

When you need more than purging
If you have to transfer materials in and out without letting air back in, add a vacuum-capable transition antechamber. If your process specifically requires low pressure, you need a dedicated vacuum box instead of a purge-only chamber.

Can I pull a vacuum in an inert gas glove box?
No. A purge-only chamber isn't built for vacuum. Use a vacuum box or a glove box with a vacuum transition chamber.
How low an oxygen level can I reach?
With good sealing and continuous purging you can hold a low-oxygen atmosphere suitable for most work. For very low, continuously held ppm levels, a gas purification system is typically added.
Which gas should I use?
Nitrogen for general work; argon for lithium and other nitrogen-reactive materials.
